The transfer window slammed shut on Thursday night. Here are all the juicy details of top spenders and big money buys as well as the transfer that failed or never happened.
Biggest Spenders
Chelsea: 1st on the biggest spenders list
The blues are the biggest spenders in this summer’s transfer window following their takeover by Todd Boehly who is the new owner and also doubles as the sports director. The American sanctioned a large outlay of cash to sign the likes of Sterling, Koulibaly, Aubameyang, etc. The club also moved on some of their players on loan and outright sale like Lukaku, Odoi, Werner, etc. The club ended up spending in the excess of 200 million euros to strengthen their squad for the new season and these new signings sure have a lot on their hands as the club hasn’t had a good start to the season.
Manchester United: 2nd on the biggest spenders list
Red Devils come second on the list with their signing of Anthony, Lisandro Martinez, Casemiro, and Tyrell Malacia while getting Eriksen for free and Dubravska on loan. The club spent more than 200 million euros in the transfer window as they saw the departure of Pogba for free, loaned out Eric Baily, and sold a few other players. Despite fans calling for the owners to leave, the club has spent quite a lot of money in the transfer window and it doesn’t look like fans are pacified by the cash injection into the team by the Glazers.
Barcelona: 3rd on the biggest spenders list
The Culers appearance on this list is a big surprise considering their financial state. Barcelona president, Laporta has been able to conjure up a miracle of some sort with his signings. He was able to get in Lewandowski, Raphinha, Kounde, Bellerin, etc. And he was also able to ensure that the likes of Dembele renewed their contracts, even the likes of Depay and De jong who were reported to be leaving because of club finances managed to stay put. The club ended up spending over 150 million euros as they also saw the departure of players Aubameyang, Braithwaite, and more.
Nottingham Forest: 4th on the biggest spenders list
The rams were a championship club last season and they got promoted to the premier league via a playoff. It is quite a surprise that they are on this list considering they are not a big team but if you consider that winning the championship playoff earn the club some cool cash which they were not shy to spend as they are hoping their acquisitions will help them beat the drop in the new season. Notable amongst their transfer deals is Morgan Gibbs-White for a whopping 50 million euros as they signed a total of 16 players.
West Ham United: 5th on the biggest spenders list
David Moyes’ side has spent more than 140 million euros as they seek to better the performance of last season. The club hasn’t had a good start and would be hoping Lucas Paqueta and other signings would change the form of the club soon.
Manchester City: 6th on the biggest spenders list
The second Manchester team on the list with around the same amount as West Ham after announcing the signing of Manuel Akanji after their previous purchases of Haaland and Phillips. The club also sold the likes of Jesus, Zinchenko, and Sterling. The city didn’t sign much but spent big which puts them on the list.
Bayern Munich: 7th on the biggest spenders list
The second team that is not English on the list is Bayern in the sixth position with an expenditure of over 130 million euros. The purchases include Sadio Mane, Gravenberch, and De Ligt as the club looks to continue its hegemony in the Bundesliga and also try to wrestle the Champions league from defending champions Real Madrid.
Newcastle United: 8th on the biggest spenders list
Backed by their Saudi owners’ wealth, Newcastle has been able to make quality signings in the transfer window which continues their expenses on players starting from last season’s summer transfer window. They have been able to spend 136 million euros on deals that involve landing Alexander Isak, at a club-record transfer fee.
Arsenal: 9th on the biggest spenders list
The Gunners also did some fantastic deals as they signed Gabriel Jesus, Zinchenko, and more in deals worth above 130 million euros. These signings have been instrumental to the good start the team has had in the new season and the club would hope that it continues like that till the end of the season.
Tottenham: 10th on the biggest spenders list
Spurs complete the top ten with an expenditure of 120 million euros on Bentacur, Romero, Bissouma, Spence, and so on. They also signed Forster and Perisic on free whilst getting Lenglet, and Kulusevski on loan deals.

Transfers that failed to happen
Frenkie De jong to Manchester United was a deal that was supposed to happen over the summer but for one reason or the other, the move didn’t materialize. It was a deal highly anticipated by Man United fans and as well a deal coveted by Erik Ten Hag, Barca’s need to offload players that are high earners seemed to make the deal set in stone. Barcelona’s President had other ideas though as he signed new players and offloaded some but De jong was never one of the departures at the club. Rumors had it that Barca wanted the Dutch player to agree to some financial terms before leaving which he refused ultimately leading to the transfer falling through. The deal could still happen in subsequent windows though it seems De jong’s stay at Barcelona is a marriage of convenience.
